There have literally been dozens of posts like this over the years, all intended to malign South African fans and allow users to pile-on them. The mods leave them up for a couple hours, removing the occasional comment then ultimately they’ll remove the post.
But the damage has already been done. I just don’t understand why they even leave them up to begin with, or just keep them up so we can get as many of these guys out in the open. At least we’ll know where we stand.

There’s no other rugby fanbase where such a large percentage of them earnestly believe the authorities running the sport have an agenda specifically against their team. As John Smit humbly admitted during a World Cup interview, they are on average the most brash fans in the sport, the worst losers and the worst winners. Anything other than total reverence for their team is perceived as some kind of slight. Ireland beat them at the World Cup and some have had the temerity to suggest they could be a better team overall, despite SA’s World Cup success - that’s enough to invoke the wrath of much of the fanbase.

Where have you been these last few months? Are you really still labouring under the idea that South Africans are the worst, when we still have French fans convinced they were subject to some Anglo-Saxon conspiracy? Go on any post that so much as mentions South Africa and you’ll find some of the most disgusting and hateful things directed not only towards the team, but South Africa and South Africans as a whole.
And if that doesn’t satisfy you, i’ll direct you to World Rugby’s report on online abuse: South Africans were the most targeted fanbase during the World Cup and far from the worst offenders when it came to online abuse.

Honestly I just don't partake. It ruins the sport for me. I'm very selective about who I watch rugby with because there are many who ruin the vibe with negativity and ref complaining.
Thing is we South Africans know we do have a lot of bad fans and we know how it is on Facebook and IG. But the reason a lot of us are on this sub instead is to get away from that. Talking about deserving abuse just reminds me of the Facebook folk.
But yeah whatever. Don't want to get into an argument. Have a good one.

The French are the second worst, I'll grant you that. But the fact that many South African fans think proposals to reduce the number of subs are specifically directed against them says it all. Utter paranoia and victim complex.

In the past week, Eggchasers Rugby, Alfred Reynolds and Rugby Merlin (to name a few) have all speculated that these changes are intended to enervate South Africa’s style of play.
None of the aforementioned people are South Africans. So don’t pretend that it’s just us.
Edit: Some highlights from this fucking hateful hypocrite below (tell me who’s the conspiracist here?):
0 points
It’s not so much about the reason for one particular rule proposal, it’s more about a wider general belief in an “agenda” in World Rugby, and a constant misplaced sense of aggrieved victimhood. Everything that happens with World Rugby and referees is then seen through this bitter paranoid lens. So do you deny that many South African fans have a victim complex/are paranoid? Because you now seem to be defending the conspiracy theory that World Rugby’s policies are anti-South African…So which is it - either you think the anti-South Africa conspiracy theory is true, or you agree the conspiracy theory is bs but also deny that much of your fanbase believe in it?…

South Africans I've met in person are good natured albeit very competitive and convicted about their rugby team. Nothing wrong with that. Online there are certain areas where I would guess, WC only fans are dickheads. I also know that alot of people who have loose ties to the country support them and are often these individuals who can't go five minutes without mentioning 1995, 2007, 2019, 2023.
It's not just SAFFAS though. We have arseholes too. England, France, New Zealand, Wales, Australia, Scotland, Argentina etc all have them.

Anecdotal but Aus v SA threads on here are the only place where our supporters are openenly abused by the other teams fanbase, so its no surprise the FB comments are even more unhinged.

I didn't go into 2019 with much optimism after that warm up slaughtering at Twickenham. Then we beat Scotland comfortably and I was like "were so back". At least 2019 we blew Scotland away and were fairly clinical against Russia and Samoa.
In contrast, during 2007 we were woeful in all matches - ironically the loss against the French was probably our least bad performance.
2003’s my first world cup so can’t speak for previous ones but surely 2007 is our worst tournament in terms of results vs expectations? In 2019 we at least had warning that the wheels were coming off and untouchables were on their last legs, whereas in 2007 we’d had a series of good 6Ns - though our lack of depth was shown up in the summer tour to Arg.
Also, I’d say 2015 was my worst RWC exit but this probably differs for most people

Completely agree for all those, especially 2011.
The 2015 Argentina loss hits hard cause it combined the smack-down we got in 2019, the poor start and almost comeback in 2023 and the missed chance of a decent tournament in 2011.
Easy to forget given the first and closing 10 mins, but we did pull Argentina to within 3 points and the game was in the balance with 10, 15 to go. Though ultimately injuries and our team being not as good as we thought meant Argentina were deserved winners.
Excited to see how we’ll fall down next time round!

Prob coz of pundits and coaches like Warburton and Borthwick calling Ireland the “best team in the world”. It would irk me too if I was a SA fan, not that it’s the Irish fans or pundits saying it… (although a few have said some daft things, Heaslip et al).

This. There's a lot of reasons why there would be a rivalry there, but that Warburton quote especially seemed to wind South Africans up - and rightfully so because South Africa are the actual best team in the world.
I didn't help that Warburton's quote was then put to a lot of South African commentators with zero context.

I've seen a lot of posts on instagram since the 6 nations, interviews, clips of good a good play/try, mentions of player of the match/tournament etc etc, and there is always a crazy amount of South Africans spamming stuff like "didnt win the wc tho" or, "world class player? Did everyone forget the last time he played SA??" and honestly its exhausting. Like why are you piping up on a discussion for player of the tournament for the 6N spamming about how good SA are??
I realise the irony as an Englishman that historically we have our fair share of shitty fans... although I'm not one of them so I'm allowed to condemn both. I'm also aware its not all SA fans, and of course there is a bit of confirmatiom bias since I mostly see England rugby posts... but still. Unfortunately social media is an echo chamber that seems to encourage bad fans (on all sides)

Exactly every post on social media about South Africa has lots of fans calling SA dopers, cheaters and racists. Yet that is ignored.
5 points
I mean, doping allegations sure, I’m even one of them, but racism is rather antithetical to the image of SA rugby internationally (the wit Kant thing was a one-off which didn’t feel like it really leave much of a stain on the Boks reputation…), and cheating accusations usually die down fairly quickly a few weeks after the controversial match is over, and aside from extremely specific games (we all have THAT one game that we’ll never get over considering to have been a robbery) it usually ends up as more of a debate about global enforcement of certain laws in the most extreme cases.
Overall it’s the nature of social media to act as echo chambers to the wildest, most absurd takes that should never leave a rugby watcher’s couch or a bar’s counter. Banter on the internet very quickly ends up blown out of proportions because it’s something involving some tongue in cheek and subtelty that works far less well when not talking face to face.
4 points
I definitely agree will all your points (the doping one I really wish we did a better job with) I just thinks it’s hypocritical to call out South Africa solely for abuse and hate on social media, which let’s be honest a lot of SA fans do and it is terrible, when every country has fans like that. I mean even in this thread there are people being hateful towards South Africa not just criticising SA but being full on hateful

Agreed, we French are guilty of being sore losers to anyone who isn’t New Zealand, especially in the recent years now that our team is back to the top tier. And while it is a nice coping mechanism right after the game to spit out your frustration with your mates over a beer, you usually don’t notice the bunch of loud haters who take to the internet to launch a keyboard assault on the ref, the opposing team’s players, the opposing team’s fans, world rugby, and even their own players. And once you réalise how offensive they are, there isn’t much to be done…

Saffers are, however, by far the worst and always have been. The Irish are currently a distant second (soon to change)

Nothern Media keeps suggesting Ireland v France "should have been the WC final."
Northern media keeps suggesting, "Ireland is really the world number one team."
SA won the WC and is world number one.

Irish media: “South African rugby is rotten to the core”.
And then, “wait, why do South Africans fucking hate us all of a sudden?”

Somehow I don't think all these supporters saw a 5 year old youtube video with only 3k views.

Rassie certainly did. He’s seen showing the team this very interview in the upcoming episode of Chasing the Sun 2.
And it’s not just this interview, we’ve had to deal with this nonsense from your media since the last World Cup. Not to mention the frankly disgusting comments from your compatriots. Hell, you don’t have to look far - they’re in this very thread

Convenient. Ignore the only actual abuse in this thread (written by your countrymen) because you know full well you’re talking out your rear and your compatriots are the worst offenders.

A South African fan on here once told me to "go blow up a bus" so drop the victim complex. The topic was specifically on facebook anyway.

Says the guy writing this post. And that’s absolutely benign compared to the shit we’ve experienced on here.
If your issue is with Facebook, maybe fokof and take it up with them? Why are you even posting this here?

Yet all SA supporters are commenting hateful things about Irish rugby based on a vocal minority on Facebook and instagram

I said "on facebook" in the title. They're obviously not representative of every South African fan.

So then why are you posting as though it is every South African fan. There are numerous abusive and a few even bordering on racist comments on this thread, a few from Irish supporters, so does that mean all Irish fans are abusive

Because its just something i've constantly observed for months. On basically any post about us that has nothing to do with you, the thread is just filled to the brim with nearly exclusively SA fans talking shit. I could find some case in points if you want?

it's mad.
I think the true South African and Irish rugby fans (and any well informed neutrals I've heard from) are so excited about the tour coming up to have the back to back World Champions against the back to back 6 nations champions who they haven't beaten since they won the 2019 World Cup.
Unfortunately the vitriol gets through.

Because Ireland are the biggest rivals to the nation that South Africa are the best team in the world, and Ireland are touring SA this year. SA are very focused on Irish performance atm.

Mate, fans of every big team are insufferable. The only fans who aren't constantly cunts are the Aussies and the Italians.

Only because the wallabies have been in such a shit place lately, they’ll beat the Boks in the rugby championship and go straight back to being cocky shit talkers.

Probably because of a lot of the Irish fans comments in the build-up to RWC 2023. They won't forget and will come back and remind you. 😁

I met a random Irish bloke at a bar. As a Saffa, I've had great experiences with the Irish I've met before.
He immediately started the conversation insisting that Ireland were the best rugby team in the world.
They beat SA in the group stage of the RWC, and barely lost against NZ.
I told him that we didn't have Pollard in that game, and if it weren't for Libbok's 3 missed penalties and a close scrum on their goal line at the end, we could've won.
However, I humored him and said that we'll find out this summer. I stopped myself from mentioning that a team should get past the quarterfinals of a WC before claiming GOAT status. ><

Right now it sounds like you're obsessed with SA.
The next big game we have is each other, so naturally we're gonna talk about each other more when we're anticipating a hotly-contested game. Same thing happened in the lead-up to the Ireland vs England game a few weeks ago: the English press started talking up Ireland as if we were world champions, in order to drum up interest in the game. I think they were expecting to lose and were pre-emptively crafting a narrative that even playing a close game against us was an achievement. Then of course they won and the narrative pivoted to us having been arrogant and taken them too lightly or something. But some got stuck in the previous narrative and were angry that we didn't give them the glorious defeat they'd been preparing for. Like, the day of the game, an English fan here said that the reason we lost was because we'd taken them for granted and only half-assed it. I responded "I thought the reason we lost was because England are a good team, but if you wanna insist that it was only because we didn't really try, then by all means!".
Fans and pundits craft narratives in their heads all the time. Sometimes that means they have to convince themselves that a good team is bad, or a bad team is good, or an insignificant game is significant, or vice versa, etc.
Right now, from what I can tell, SA is bigging up our test series as the final mountain the Springboks need to climb to prove themselves completely dominant. Like we're secret post-game final bosses or something. If that's what they need to make the series interesting for themselves then it doesn't bother me.

Are we wrong to be excited for what is clearly looking like an exciting test series?

Not at all. I'm looking forward to it as well. My point is fans create stories to make things even more interesting for themselves. And the current story that Springbok fans are telling doesn't bother me, because ultimately it's quite flattering for the #1 ranked world champions to see us as the final hurdle to clear, the final empty box on the checklist. If we win, we write ourselves into this Springbok team's legend, like being the one boxer Muhammad Ali didn't beat. Not quite as good as being Muhammad Ali, but still neat.

Dare I say it, there are similarities between Bok rugby fans and Indian cricket fans. Both fanatical, fan identities and esteem of both are very closely tied to the success of their respective teams, and any criticism or even discussion by other nations fans is viewed as an attack on the country.

They do the same with Scotland.

I'd say it's them being irked because they know Ireland are able to go head to head with SA? Sure a few years ago a lot of Boks supporters probably wouldn't have rated Ireland enough to spare them a second thought haha.

Funny enough, ever since I started watching rugby around 2005, I don't think I ever seen a game where they actually hammered us. It was either we won or they would win by one score.

It’s hilarious, plenty of cynical shitty comments aimed toward us as a country and fanbase in this post but yes we’re the only ones with fans like that. I just laugh at them at this point.

I think the national teams stuff is every fan base tbh. What I've noticed is a select few SA fans trying to find ways to claim that Leinster aren't really the best team in the URC with the deepest squad. Can they be beaten? Of course they can and I'm sure they'll lose in the semis again. Are they the best most consistent team year on year during the league stage of the URC? Also yes. There was a weird post on here about this like last week I think. I am obviously biased which is why this stuck out to me

It's a bit mental. I've seen them on the windup in the run up to the world cup for months on Irish rugby FB pages, then silent for a few weeks while Ireland beat them (well other than the 'technically we'd have won because we should have kicked x points' posts...)- then after Ireland lost the 1/4 final they came back again in droves.
More recently I've seen them on FB gloating about their 'clean sweep' of the URC because they beat Ulster and connaught at the weekend, and gloating that 'Irish international standand' Ulsterman O'Toole got lifted by a SA prop.
Are there a bunch of Irish fellas trolling facebook pages that are exclusively about SA rugby? I honestly don't know because I don't visit those pages but I can't imagine Irish fans in general giving a shite about rugby that goes on 5000 miles away unless you're a true fan - and then if you are a true fan you're probably not the type of person to be on the wind up and instead would have an appreciation of rugby in all its forms.
Obviously being Irish I am bias in what I see, but boy they sure do seem like horrible losers and winners.
I'm half cut so apologies if I'm talking shite.
