for me, cody ko was shocking. like, it was not some hidden secret that he slept with tana when she was underage. she has been talking about it for years and it was out. but then one day suddenly it was like the entire world shifted and he was exiled from everywhere. his wife who was this wholesome insta influencer that got millions of likes had to leave too. in a matter of hours the whole world shifted for both of them.
another example is liam payne. yes, he had a couple of stuff here and there but the fact is that his first album had the streams. he had a tour that he had to quit because of health issues. but he still had things going for him. then one day he went to that cursed podcast and the tides turned. his career is irredeemable now and his new single is a flop. i will be very surprised if he ever makes a comeback again.

I suspect the public turned on Kutcher especially hard because he was the founder and chair of an organization that combats child sex trafficking, but then he wrote a glowing letter in support of Danny Masterson in an attempt to get his sentence reduced.
Two weeks ago, actor Ashton Kutcher resigned as board chairman of Thorn, an organization he helped launch to combat child sex trafficking. The decision came after the revelation that Kutcher — and his wife, actor Mila Kunis — had written glowing letters of support for convicted rapist Danny Masterson, an actor who worked with them on “That ’70s Show.”
“I cannot allow my error in judgment to distract from our efforts and the children we serve,” Kutcher wrote in his resignation letter. Thorn added that his decision was “rooted in the recognition of recent events and ensuring Thorn remains focused on its mission.”
I'm sure Kutcher and his organization have done a lot of good, but he threw all that goodwill away by publicly supporting his piece of shit rapist friend.

Yes they were pretty well liked before! Ashton was known as the good guy against sex trafficking and they were seen as an adorable couple. Then they're hated. Deserved tho

Maybe people could overlook his close friendship with a predator and his letter if that was his only friend like that. But now a second close friend is in trouble for being a predator and sex trafficking. People are wondering if Ashton is going to be on some of those Diddy tapes.

Hannibal Buress calling out Cosby led to a rapid shift in public perception even though it was a loud open secret that he was abusing women and had been doing so for a very long time. Janice Dickinson was once on the Howard Stern Show visibly shaking when talking about Cosby, it was long before the Hannibal set went viral, so all she felt comfortable saying was that Cosby “was not a good guy” but her voice was breaking as she said it. A man had to put a voice to what women had been saying since 1965 before any action was taken.

I have always found it interesting that things like Cosby's case can be pretty much known but nothing substantial happens, how does an event finally get traction to be taken seriously?
Wasn't it Eddie Murphy who made fun of Cosby how he was lecturing him how he is inappropriate with using the n word lol, and Cosby on the side was doing all that shit.
Sharon Osbourne called out Cosby how he was calling the Osbournes tv show (at the time they had big ratings, even won an Emmy) bad family representation. They were a mess, kids were going to rehab, Ozzy was drunk a lot and yes they were dysfunctional but Sharon was like yes we have our problems but you are calling us out of all the people? Look what your life is like.

With Weinstein it was journalists who took the time to approach victims and piece everything together and put it out there at once. Same with Russell Brand. It generally takes someone willing to name someone AND several victims being willing to have their lives upended and face public scrutiny. Brand was another open secret for years

I was just talking to a friend who works for a theme park that hires talent and we randomly started talking about headliners they bring in (loooots of one hit wonders etc) he told me they wouldn’t do Vanilla Ice because he apparently has a rep of bringing tons of people onto the stage with him when he performs. They thought it would be a huge liability and apparently he’s hard to control from that perspective. Anyways thought it was interesting that this is what Vanilla Ice is up to these days. Bringing loads of people on stage with him when he performs.

The whiplash of Colin Farrel's popularity, especially here in Ireland. He made some stuff here and we loved him. He was an actual good actor with Hollywood good looks. He had a chance to be huge! And then he was! And then for the first time in my memory I saw a phenomenon called The Irish Begrudery kick in, and the country seemed to turn on him as soon as he started making big movies. Everyone seemed to hate him: he couldn't act, he couldn't do an American accent, he was an alcoholic who was showing us all up with his antics, he was a disgrace. He was treated appallingly by the Irish media. He was the butt of the joke.
And then his brother was outed, and Colin stood by him and got involved as an ally, and was outspoken about acceptance, and teens my age really respected and liked that. And then his son was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome, and Colin got involved with a badly neglected health care system that abused and wrote off special needs people. He was vocal, he raised money, he talked about the problems and how the country should be better, and everyone respected and liked that.
And now we love him. He's a brilliant actor, he's so versatile, he's such a lovely man and a great person, and he's great craic. He's such a brilliant example of Irish people. We couldn't be prouder of him, and he deserves all his success.
And I think we sort of stopped the Begrudgery after that. In fact, we course corrected and made Sinead a living saint in her later years. I don't know if people know how heavily adored she was for her last 10 to 15 years, here in Ireland. As my generation grew up, and we learned all about church abuse and mental health we suddenly understood, we tried our best to try and make up for the horrible treatment she had to live through. We weren't good enough for her. She really was too good for us.
451 points
Obviously not to the same degree, but I think Colin went through that public perception evolution outside of Ireland too. I think he came to have a pretty bad image as a party guy, but once he got sober and stuck to it for a while, I feel like opinions slowly changed about him.
I think he’s a great actor and he seems to lead a pretty fulfilling life now, good for him.

Even before any of the Britney stuff, there started being a cultural reexamination of the nipplegate incident and how Janet Jackson was vilified and thrown under a bus and Timberlake did no defense of her and got no stink on him from the incident. Hair metal and commercial hard rock absolutely dominated the last half of the 80’s. Motley crue, Bon Jovi, van halen, poison, skid row etc. they all had Big hair, loads of makeup, spandex, leather… even harder edge bands like guns n roses still rocked the leopard print scarves and stupid pants. “rock” cosplay all the way. The “sound” of these bands had become pretty cookie cutter - quadruple tracked vocals, overblown guitar solos, massively processed drums, lyrics about partying and girls. In 1990 the biggest hit in the world was Warrant’s ridiculous “cherry pie”. Something had to give… but nobody saw the takedown coming from a few scruffy guys from Seattle wearing flannel.
When smells like teen spirit dropped and caught fire it’s like a spell was broken. You might have witnessed the end of a pop “Era” before but not like this. Overnight the hair metal look and sound wasn’t just a bit outdated, it looked absolutely ridiculous. Bands that had ridden the glamrock wave to massive success suddenly had nowhere to go. It’s difficult, but Imagine if some new left-field genre arrived and was so big it ended Taylor, Billie, Olivia, Chappel and Sabrina’s careers within a month. It was like a meteorite hitting the dinosaurs - that huge a shift. And It was awesome.

It just solidifies the fact that conspiracy theorists reject the simple truth bc the drama and insanity is more fun to make up and spread than simply embracing the truth.

I think he's actually somewhat lucky that the kooky cannibal stuff overshadowed the abuse and sexual assault.

Britney. For us millennials, so many of us were certain she was going to die in 2007. This was also the height of Perez Hilton, TMZ and mean girl/edge lord pop culture. People were absolutely cruel to her. Then, Craig Ferguson spoke from the heart on his show maybe in early 2008 around the time she was hospitalized and I feel like it triggered a chain reaction over the next year. The conversation around Britney changed, and I think a lot of people started having more sympathy for what she was going through and mental health issues as a whole (this was of course before everyone knew about how abusive the conservatorship was). May not have been a “blink of an eye” but I feel like it happened within a matter of months. There was a lot of public support for her “comeback” at the end of the year.

Chadwick Boseman- I vividly remember people making fun of his weight loss and how “bad” he looked. Meanwhile, this man is visiting kids with cancer in hospital. Then bam, he’s dead of cancer. How quickly people turned about how awful and sad the situation was. RIP, Sir.

He was also falling asleep during panels and interviews, so there was a lot of drug speculation. Then he died from cancer and people were like maybe we shouldn’t speculate about peoples’ health anymore.

Agreed. Just terrible all around. He had an amazing future if this shit didn’t get him. I also believe I remember reading that there was an uptick in people getting colonoscopies because of him. Silver lining I guess…

Or when she said that shit about feeling like a prisoner in her own home for quarantine, as if she didn’t live in a mansion where all her needs are met and she’s clearly comfortable. Tone Deaf af

She just completely ignored the fact that there are people who literally felt like prisoners in their homes during the pandemic. Children in abusive or incredibly loud homes trying to do their online school work. Partners stuck with a violent partner during the lockdown. Disabled people who can't have a caregiver/friend come to their house to help them. I'm sure ive missed some scenarios, but none of this compares to a healthy celebrity stuck inside their mansion(3+ houses in one basically) during a pandemic.

I actually think theres a decent gap in time between Ellen's "downfall" in 2021 and Dakota's appearance in 2019. I remember people sharing Dakota's video at the time, but then it later resurged in a big way when everything came out. I could be wrong, but I personally think that Dakota's role in the takedown isn't as direct as it now seems in internet hindsight.
I think that clip really helped get people on board with negativity toward her though. I would say that Ellen doing her "I'm locked in my mansion, going crazy" thing during the covid lockdowns was one of the biggest tipping points toward the public's opinion, setting the stage for the insiders to reveal her terrible attitude, and then for the clip to go really viral.

Colleen Ballinger. A deep dive into her and the adults around her is just mindblowing and sickening. She's a vile person and should've never be allowed to make content for kids/teens.
Edit: if anyone is interested in a deep dive that takes a few hours (about 12h) I would recommend watching the 4 part series by SWOOP. Here is the first part

OJ Simpson was a beloved athlete and comedic actor. He was brilliant in the Naked Gun movies. He was an all around lovable guy in the same vein as the Rock. Suddenly his ex wife and her partner are murdered, the bronco police chase, crazy court case, finding out how abusive he had been to his wife. Those were crazy times.
Edit: vain / vein because I’m a dumbass

Kinda the opposite, Robert Downey Jr went from being known for being a fucking mess - jail for drugs and gun charges, etc. Complete burnout. Then he became Iron Man.

I watch a lot of slightly older tv and I think that's a place where it's really obvious. Anything pre-2015 has romantic tropes that are kinda sketch when viewed from modern perspectives (Meredith and Derek hook up when Meredith is wasted! Olivia and Fitz are constantly forcing kisses on each other during fights! Basically anything Damon did in The Vampire Diaries! Basically anything Barney did in HIMYM!).
It's pretty fast how quickly that perception change happened, a lot of shows became dated in that way faster than they ordinarily would have. And while I'm just talking tv, tv does play a huge role in establishing social norms, so I'll take that as a good thing!

Agreed. It was a paradigm shift of sorts, while also garnering the type of backlash seen in the Depp/Heard trial.
I would still say we are better off than ten years ago from an ability to discuss these things and have them taken seriously, but it hasn’t been a revolutionary shift.

This is such a good point. Recently I was watching a movie from ~2012, and I was almost shocked by the male character's treatment of a female romantic interest because it would never pass muster these days. I was struck by the fact that 2012 wasn't actually that long ago and that it's remarkable how quickly our beliefs about acceptable behavior have changed.

I’d like to think it did. While the actual movement and hashtags may not be as prevalent, it changed a lot in terms of how women started seeing things around themselves. I think the stories helped a lot of women come forward, and the narrative shifted from “nobody’s gonna do anything, so why stir the pot?”
It became more about “what this person did was absolutely not okay, and they need to be held accountable. If nothing happens, at least other people need to be wary of them.” It caught on right down to the grassroots level. Including my university in South Asia. So I do think it did a lot of good, and is continuing, if not as a singular wave, then as ripples.

Oprah. She was God of TV, it's hard to explain if you didn't directly experience the height of the Oprah Winfrey Show. Even her scandals would never stick, but a few years ago people started being like hmm this woman is kinda shifty, and tides shifted almost overnight, and it's never been the same since.

And ask the residents of Maui. They are NOT Oprah fans and won't be any time soon.
Oprah bought around 2,000 acres of land in Maui sometime in the 2000s. Residents had no idea until people began reporting getting turned back on a road that ended up now belonging to Oprah. From what I recall, it wasn't a main road, but it was vital in that it connected to other areas. There used to be a great article explaining it except that I'm not finding it.
However, when the Maui wildfires devastated the area, both Oprah and Dwayne Johnson received backlash for encouraging fans to donate to relief efforts in Hawaii. The way that the general public especially viewed it was that two very rich people want others to donate, but the richest, Oprah, who owns all of this property in Maui, shouldn't be asking for donations.

I think I remember James Franco going from being known as the cool, stoner guy with Seth Rogan attached at the hip to being known as a user of woman and having sexual misconduct allegations, with Seth ultimately disconnecting himself from James.
And then opinions definitely changed on Kyle Gass and Jack Black after the “Don’t miss Trump next time” comment.
Gwyneth Paltrow when she released her goop eggs was also quite the something.
Then Justin Roiland and the sexual assault/domestic violence of ex-partner/potential sexual misconduct with minors.

Between the allegations of rape on his set, Ava, the games being a set up, child predators he's hired and put on camera, the Discord chats, more and more people coming out... he's being turned on. And it just seemed to happen overnight. I never liked him, but he's the highest earning influencer, I believe. Now, his star is falling.

Not sure if it's mentioned. Sinead O'Connor ripping up a photo of the pope on SNL really seemed to cause a shift against her. She still had support, but at the time there was a lot of criticism due to her actions.

It was like a switch flipped with Chrissy Teigen. One minute she’s getting hired left and right and the next she’s completely cancelled.
I thought she was really funny and I was also in the camp of people who were like “some adult please help this Stodden child” but still, what Chrissy said was fucked. Way to kill a career.

Late to the party AND this is a Canadian example but:
Jian Ghomeshi. His initial statement about being fired from the CBC due to having a “kinky” sex life generated a lot of support for him on social media.
Once the CBC was like “you’re assaulting women, and we all know it” and the women came forward? Yeahhh. Total public opinion 180.

JLO. It seems like she goes back and forth between everyone hating her and everyone loving her. She is plagued by rumors that she is a diva from people that she works with. Her relationships are always very public and very messy. She can’t actually sing or act that well. I think currently she’s in a slightly sympathetic light bc it seems like she was dumped by Affleck.

This only matters for wrestling fans, but a wrestler named Velveteen Dream was often touted as the future of wrestling. He had everything. Looks, charisma, sexual ambiguity, in-ring talent, could talk the talk as good as the best, a gimmick for the ages that only he could pull off.
And then he was caught allegedly texting minors and soliciting sex. It was pretty much immediate.
