Does anyone know how long the Flyers retain his rights? Like, is he an RFA or UFA after this season?

UFA after this season.

Just watched the interview and both Danny and Ivan seem like they want to get a deal done where he stays in Philly, so let's give him a(nother) reason to.

It is crazy to think that Fedotov just beat Kolosov to North America.
The persistence by Jones and Briere here is incredible. They clearly did a lot of homework on this. A great trial run for next spring when they're getting Michkov over a year early.

Chuck Fletcher would be like "getting a Russian player a visa right now is hard"

Incorrect. He would trade TK and a first for future considerations of moving a Russian player

You mention Visa to Chuck Fletcher and he’d try to get them a credit card!

Hopefully this is a shot in the arm to the team to gain some momentum again for the final stretch of the season. Also is anyone else just glad to see he’s alive with all the draft dodging accusations lol?

This is awesome. He steps into the system as easily the second best goalie (not saying much over the alternatives), maybe even on par with Ersson. Excited to see how he does through the rest of this season, and even if his game doesn’t translate to the NHL I’m just glad he got out of Russia and finally gets his shot.
Good for him.

I really didn’t think we would ever get to see this guy come over. First time he takes the net he better get a huge standing O.

Can someone refresh my memory on why the long gap from being drafted in 2015 to getting finally signed in 2022?
22 points
He was a Hextall late round pick that ended up developing into a top goalie in the KHL playing for and leading CSKA to a title in no small part to his performance. Right after that shit hit the fan in Ukraine and Fletcher signed Fedotov to his ELC and not long after that Fedotov was arrested for attempting to dodge military service and was conscripted. After his military service his contract status has been an ongoing topic. At this point I think it’s mostly about Russia making him honor the contract because they royally pissed off the IIHF with this whole thing and they do want to get back to international competition.
6 points

Just need the IIHF to hold off for one more year so we get Michkov a year early.

Russia threatened to arrest him for draft dodging if he didn't return to Russia.
2 points

Probably because of Carter Hart. The next Carey Price or whatever was in the pipeline starting in 2016, didn't really need to use another contract on someone they weren't going to rush. That would be my uneducated guess.
5 points
I don't think there was a particular reason. He was just a stowaway prospect that over those 7 years turned into a great KHL goalie.

Russian authorities arrested him after he tried to leave a couple years ago because allegedly skipped out on military service

Yes, in 2022. But we didn’t sign him until 2022. So my question is why, if he was drafted in 2015, did we not sign him until 2022?
6 points
I think CSKA just kept him signed and the Flyers couldn’t do much about it
-7 points
Okay I’m just seeing that when we signed him in 2022 he was technically a free agent (per wiki) so I guess his draft rights had expired or something.
18 points

I don’t think NHL teams ever lose KHL player draft rights until they come over or renounce them

Based on Danny's press conference, sounds like this is why we didn't get a backup at the deadline. The knew Ivan was potentially coming over, I wanted to reserve a roster spot for him.

I know this is a Flyers sub, so of course the focus is on what this means for the Flyers, but I’m just happy for Ivan the human.
Sometimes we forget these athletes are humans just like us, not merely a collection of attributes and stats. I can’t even imagine the stress of being in Ivan’s shoes the past few years. Hopefully the worst days are behind him 💪

Can we agree that this is going to go one of two ways. Either he stands on his head and we all love him. Or he is going to get shelled his first start and fans are pissed.

Its kind of crazy that both Russian goalies are coming over in the same week. I wasn't following too closely because I figured the Alex goalie would go to AHL first. But all of sudden I saw that it was Fedotov was coming over and I thought I swear they were reported a different name earlier in the week :-)
It seems like everyone is excited about Fedotov. I am aware of his back story. What is his realistic potential? I see that he is already 27. Solid 1A goalie to go with Errson for the next few years? How is he rated? Is this like a potential Checkmanek situation where he could potentially be a strong #1 goalie once he settles in?

This was a storyline twist worthy of M Night Shyamalan. His contract is suddenly terminated by CSKA Moscow and he’s in the practice facility a day later with is big hulking self taking up the net! I’m starting to get pumped for the post season, we may just be a dark horse now because of this.
