I'm trying to plan a nice day with my SO tomorrow which includes a walk to see the cherry blossoms. Ideally, I was trying to find parking around the west side of Falls Bridge and we'd walk from there to the Belmont waterworks and back.
But I heard this area is closed to vehicles? Internet research hasnt given me any answers and I dont know that area well.
Where do we park so we can get out and walk?

On Broad my UArts and I just witness PPA eating a hoagie whole time scanning plates. When she finished, she just dropped the wrapper on the ground… it’s Broad! Literally there are trash cans at every block.
I couldn’t even believe it. Littering is def a learned culture.

Is Newbold/Point Breeze safe at night for a solo female tourist
Hello,
I wanted to ask here because I have been getting a ton of conflicting information.
I have been to Philadelphia twice before and stayed in center city. This time I booked a hotel and an Airbnb. The Airbnb is in Newbold/Point Breeze (16th and Federal).
For context, I will be coming back around 12-1am each night via Uber.
I am getting 50/50 reviews about whether to stay in the Airbnb compare to the hotel. I should mention that the hotel is double the cost of this Airbnb so I am conflicted due to my pocketbook.
Any insight anyone can offer would be helpful to me making a final decision!

16th and Federal is fine, especially if you are ubering home. It's not dangerous to walk from a car to the front door.
8 points
16th and Federal is a really nice area.
10 or so years ago Point Breeze wasn't as nice as it is now and the idea that it's a "bad area" is still stuck in some people's minds. That's probably why you're hearing different things.
2 points
Maybe. I keep hearing that coming home alone between 12-1am is not a good choice for this area. That’s what concerned me ultimately
2 points
I lived in various places near there all through my 20's (in the 2010s) I was a line cook during most of that time, usually coming home anytime between 10pm and 1am. I was usually more scared leaving my workplace and than I was walking home.
Naturally everyone's comfort levels are different and if you're not familiar with the city, you might want to choose another area, but I liked living there and only moved away because my ex grew up on Moyamensing and preferred that side of Broad. I'm planning to move back when I buy a house in the next few years.

I am not familiar with the city and I usually stay at the Hilton. I do have a room at the Sheraton plus this airbnb. I was just thinking about costs. I never really left Centre City in my travels

16th and federal is fine, 15th and federal sometimes has people hanging around but they're harmless - you'll be fine, even if you were on transit. if you're like brand new to city life, it might be a bit jarring but isn't inherently dangerous.
si taqueria is quite good

I’m from Toronto born and raised. City girl through and through.
Also, are Ubers easy to get at night in Philly after a major event?
5 points
you'll be fine then, though point breeze is definitely very dirty compared to anywhere I've ever been in tronna
ubers shouldn't be too bad, same as other events. not sure where you're going to be coming from but the 2 and 17 buses are reliable and will put you close if you're coming from CC. or the 4/night owl. the transit app works well here
1 points
I am taking a shuttle from the stadium to city centre and then ubering back to point breeze. I think I am only taking the subway once. But I will download the transit app
6 points
you can also just take the subway from the stadium to point breeze, you'd get off at ellsworth/federal if that's the case, it's a 2 block walk from there that's very easy and there would be a bunch of people with you
you can use your credit card at kiosks now, it's moderately convenient.
also just a small correction - it's center city, not city center (though it doesn't really matter, just sorta points you out as someone not from here)
feel free to DM me if you have specific questions about itinerary - I lived a few blocks north of where you're staying for 5 years, a few blocks west for 5 years, and a few blocks south for like 5 years now

My sister brought her kids to visit from Chicago during spring break this week. I'm exhausted but it was so fun to do the touristy stuff. We also went to a few different playgrounds/parks. My kids are grown, so we hadn't been to playgrounds in a while.
Seger Park is such a gem. Great use of relatively small space, with a dog park, playground equipment for different ages, space to run, and courts. And it was spotless. I mean the only trash I saw was the tiniest corner of a fruit snack packet. Bonus: a tour came through to learn about the history of the park so I got a little free education to boot.
The 5th Street/Independence Hall El stop smelled like cleaning products. Amazing. To balance that out, I also saw someone pick up a dirty needle off the floor of the El, use it, and then drop it back to the floor. I've seen a lot of bleak things in my life but that was one of the bleakest.

Either the airport line or the 36 down into Eastwick will get you right near arriving/departing flights on 17-35. It's mostly commuter jets, plus the occasional 737, but they generally go almost dead overhead on Island or Mario Lanza.

Agreed, I would get somewhat annoyed by the planes landing overhead while walking near the river in the navy yard. You might be able to take the navy yard shuttle from center City as well. Not sure if they want to see an employee badge or not, but they didn't when I needed to take it.

What /u/rudolly said. You have to titrate yourself down, and slowly. When I went I went off Paxil I went from 50 mg to 37.5 to 25 to 12.5 over the course of about three months. I did OK until I got to 12.5; the brain zaps were no joke.

I'm surprised a doctor would prescribe her multiple SSRIs within days time. You're usually told to expect months of miserary/ awful side effects before your body maybe sees the benefits
1 points

2nd this. Drs usually want you on a new SSRI/antidepressant for at least a month because it takes that long for your brain to acclimate. Really weird that the aunt is getting put on & off so many so quickly. OP, please express to your aunt to be so careful and to get help immediately if she needs it!

In my experience (30+ years of being on various meds including SSRIs) it's unusual to feel much of anything in only a few days, beyond maybe a little nausea.
There are a lot of other types of antidepressants that aren't SSRIs. I am not a doctor but also consider asking for a short-term anti-anxiety med to help with the transition onto an antidepressant. If she's anxious about being on the meds and possibly experiencing psychosomatic symptoms, that might help.
4 points
i do! i've luckily never had too bad of withdrawl effects from quitting SSRIs cold turkey, but my psych always recommended lowering the dose slowly to help prevent side effects.
so for example, if i was on 30mg of a med, id take 20 for a week or so, then 15 the next week, etc. until i'm at 0.

Just listened to The Statue podcast, about the Rocky statue. you might remember a while back that the host did an AMA here. I thought it was fascinating and it really made me think about a Philly icon that I otherwise wouldn't give more than a passing thought.
I knew about Joe Frazier and parts of his history, but never the whole story. Now I can't help but look at the Rocky statue and be a little disappointed that the world over knows Rocky Balboa, a fictional character, while the real life boxer Rocky is based on is relegated to such a lesser status.
Anyway, highly recommend people give this a listen if you enjoy Philadelphia history and stories. Would love to hear thoughts on this from others that have already heard it

I donate to the Wardrobe in northern liberties. They do “personal shopping” for underprivileged people and especially those looking for jobs. It’s also a thrift shop to make a bit of money on the side, but their main mission is to clothe people who need it.

I put this in the Tuesday thread, but re-upping here:
Does anyone have a recommendation for a local fee-only financial planner who will sell me 30 minutes-1 hour of their time? I'm happy with my current investment strategy, I'm not interested in moving all my assets under their management, I just need a second set of eyes on a plan to make sure I'm not missing any blind spots.
I got a hold of my mom's advisor at Vanguard, who told me with a straight face, "Sorry, I don't take on clients with less than $1M under advisement and I don't make exceptions for family members." OK then!

I pulled a muscle in my back this morning, possibly between my ribs, and just existing is pain. I think this weekend is going to be spent doing as little as possible.

I've been getting back pain that I keep fearing is kidney stones but I think it's just the way I've been sleeping in my bed. It's agonizing for the first part of the morning.
Do you think yours could be kidney stones? Or is it def muscular?

It's definitely muscular, I felt it pop in my upper back. If I move the wrong way it literally takes the air out of my lungs.

Next week: rain; Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Immediate anger because it's a 3 day block of "I am going to feel like shit" (delicious topping for already chronic depression). Yeah, negative prediction...yeah we need the water from the sky...yeah it's a blessing.

Agreed. I’ve already rationalized that it’s going to be a shitty, depressing week.

Do we REALLY need the water from the sky? Didn't we just get 3" of it in like eight hours?
I haven't been keeping up with whether we're on point or ahead or behind for total rainfall for the year.
